Red Sarah x Red's Ribbons x now stocking Sugarlesque Boutique

My shop is always full of visitors ( just how I like it) and the other day I had a visit from one of my favourite burlesque/circus performers, the incredible Red Sarah !

She's branched out from spinning fire tassels to creating beautiful one of a kind accessories. She had a stall at the last Sugarlesque Bazaar and I couldn't stop drooling over her goodies, I'm a magpie, so all her sparkly treats caught my eye.

I'm lucky enough to now be stocking her Reds Ribbons range of accessories in the shop and they're perfect for Christmas. With prices ranging from £15 for a bejewelled 1920 headband to £40 for a gorgeous bird fascinator with pearls, her stuff is affordable as well !

If you pop by the shop you'll see her lovely pieces currently brightening up my Christmassy window display ( I know it's only november, but i love the festive season).

The ever glamorous burlesque pin-ups Sophia St.Villier and Emerald Fontaine swooshed into the boutique to visit me the other day, and made me feel suitably unglamorous without even trying ! Seriously, they look so gorgeous at all times, I must find out their secret ...

Luckily, you now have the chance to find out their secrets as they'll be hosting one of their "Be A Pleasure To Yourself" workshops n my humble boutique on Tuesday 29th November !

Be a Pleasure to Yourself is a unique and racy experience for women to discover the secrets of striptease, vintage lingerie and erotic toys.

In this interactive experience, guests enjoy handcrafted Pure Pleasure cocktails served in art deco glassware whilst hostesses Emerald Fontaine and Sophia St. Villier demonstrate how to put on and remove a corset, stockings and other lingerie in a seductive manner for a lover.

Tips are shared on how to create the femme fatale look. Completing this experience, is a fun yet informed talk about erotic toys from luxury brand Je Joue.

So my friend, and hot piece of ass, Slinky Sparkles just invited me to watch her shake and shimmy at The O2 in a couple of weeks ... wooooohoooooooo !!!

I've never been to the O2, not even when it was just the humble old millennium dome, and I've been dying to go. What better excuse than to go and watch a friend perform and then get wasted drunk afterwards, yes please.

Sugarlesque Boutique is looking for a new intern ! If you think you, or someone you know, is up for the challenge then get in touch - deadline for applications friday 14th october.

Sugarlesque is a lingerie boutique situated in Kingly court, just off the world famous Carnaby street in central London. As well as selling lingerie, accessories and art, it also offers regular intimate events including Dr.Sketchys burlesque life drawing class, art exhibitions, burlesque classes and craft workshops. Lingerie and accessories are also designed and made instore.

Sugarlesque Boutique needs an intern with either an interest in lingerie design and construction and/or PR and events management to join this exciting work environment. This is a temporary unpaid position, and applicants must be available to work flexible hours. This position would suit someone looking to enhance their c.v. and pick up valuable industry experience as there is a lot to learn and lots of different roles to get involved in.

Your duties will include pattern cutting, sewing, events management, serving customers, website & social media management, PR and marketing as well as other duties.

Candidates must :

· Be over 18
Be based in London
Have sewing skills, experience in lingerie and sleepwear/swimwear is a bonus.
Be available to work 2-3 days a week between October and January
Have experience in social media

The other day Liam explained to me how to make gifs using Photoshop. It was an amazing conversation. Then I forgot everything he said. Then today Violetta came into my shop and we took lots of still photographs using my macbook. Then I spent the entire night trying to teach myself how to make gifs using Photoshop, again. Then I figured it out, and now I cant stop making gifs !!!

Sugarlesque x Vogue Fashion Night Out x Thu 8th September

I love a party, it's a gift and a curse. So, believe me, it broke my heart when I had to sacrifice my Bestival tickets this weekend to stay in the boutique. Buuuut, it's worth it because carnaby street is hosting 2 incredible events over the next couple of days. On saturday, there'll be the Carnaby Catwalk event and i'll be doing a cheeky film screening and Emma from Boom Nails will be doing nail art instore all day.

Tomorrow is the annual Vogue Fashion Night Out, an afterhours shopping extravaganza hosted by the Queen of all magazines, Vogue.

The atmosphere is going to be amazing, with all the shops in the surrounding area putting on instore events, offering free drinks and giving discount ! I'll be hosting a naughty little burlesque peepshow in the window and offering 10% off everything, so be sure to pop by and visit.

I'm not great in interviews, I tend to start rambling and chatting shit. And of course i do the classic schoolgirl move of zoning out of the question but still trying to answer it, so end up talking complete rubbish as a result.

But anyway, it was a really nice interview and we talked about other things than lingerie, for example the recent London riots. Looking forward to doing more and more !

Sugarlesque x past x present x future ...

Don't read this unless you have the patience to read through all my ramblings, it's a bit of an essay, sorry ...

So, the past 6 months creating Sugarlesque Boutique have been crazy and so so stressful !

I finally realised my dream of having my own lingerie boutique where I could sit and sew knickers in the window all day and all of my friends could pop in for visits and bring me chocolate and we could sit on a bench outside and drink rum in the sunshine ! And I have to say, it's been an amazing experience, although setting up your own shop is really fucking hard. Maintaining that shop is even fucking harder. And making that shop profitable is probably the fucking hardest thing i've ever tried to do in my life.

But, we've managed anyway, thanks to a lot of support from a few really special friends and relatives. I started Sugarlesque over 4 years ago when I was still at university, and I had been told by so many business advisors that retail is a minefield. Everybody advised that I shouldn't open a shop, and I should just work from home for as long as I possibly could and grow the business "organically" whatever that means. It turns out that they were giving me really good advice. But I ignored all the good advice and decided to go for what i really wanted because I'm impulsive and impatient, and to be honest I thought, fuck it.

When i decided to open a shop it was with one of my closest friends Clare ( headmistress of Dr.Sketchy London). We were drunk in my living room ( yes, this is really how it happenned. So dumb, but I'm just writing honestly). We agreed to go for it that night, and in the morning when we sobered up, it still seemed like a good idea, so we emailed Kingly Court and arranged a meeting. We thought they'd reject our application and we could just use it as an experience for when we opened a shop later in the year, but they said yes. Everything happened so quickly after that and we opened a shop 3 months later !

The first month was great - all our friends and family were so hype about the fact that we had a shop that they flooded in and spent money, and told their friends and then they spent money, and it seemed like the easiest thing in the world. We made enough to cover rent and bills and we were having shop parties all the time and everyone came to visit and customers were saying nice things and everybody loved it and we were on top of the world ! Then as time carried on, the harsh realities of owning a shop set in. Lesson number 1. Retail is unreliable. And the overhead costs are ridiculous, why did I ignore the warnings !!!

But honestly I'm like a pitbull, once I'm locked onto something that's it. It's in my nature to keep going till I get my own way, so i worked 3 jobs at once just to support myself. I was in the shop during the day, working at a bar at night and teaching on the weekends. I remember Michele from Bordello lingerie boutique telling me to kiss my social life goodbye just before I opened the shop, and she was right. But honestly, none of that was important, I learnt to survive on no sleep and I've always survived on no money, so that wasn't a problem.

My advice, don't do it the way we did it, we were very very stupid. But I'm so glad I did and I don't care if I sound like a dickhead for saying this - I'm really really proud of myself ! My bank manager told me yesterday that most businesses lose money in the first 6 months and shut down, that hasn't happenned. Sugarlesque has not only survived, but it's grown, although I still have a long way to go.

We have been through so much together and it's a testament to what good friends we are that we're still even talking to eachother ! Honestly, there's been times that I've wanted to smash her face in, and I'm sure she's felt the same way as me, but were friends for life and this experience has only made us stronger. From the beginning I knew that this wasn't Clare's passion and that she might not be in it for the long run. I couldn't have opened a shop with anyone else, and it's been the biggest learning curve of my life.

We opened with basically no funding, no bank loan and no experience. I kind of felt that I skipped a step in the life of a lingerie business and went straight to a retail premises when I really should have spent more time establishing my own brand. But I was determined to open a shop, because all I've ever wanted was to own a shop ! Now 6 months later, I'm glad i trusted my instincts because we've managed to survive when so many shops with more experience and funding behind them have failed. I trusted in the fact that Sugarlesque is a brand with a strong identity and that I had something to offer that other lingerie boutiques don't, and I stand by that.

However, a few months in I could tell that the boutique wasn't what Clare wanted to do with her life and so we decided it was best if we end the business partnership and I carry on the boutique by myself - I'm sure Clare will agree that this is the best decision either of us ever made. So onwards and upwards ! It's terrifying going into this by myself, but in all honesty I've never been more excited about anything in my life before.

The boutique will be closed from monday 12th september until saturday 17th september when I'll be reopening the boutique by myself. I'm going to be leaving this unit on the 1st floor of Kingly Court and moving upstairs to a new unit on the 2nd floor of Kingly Court, which will be easier for me to manage by myself. It's my mission to make the boutique even bigger and even better than before ! I've already been a shopping spree at the poundshop on Kilburn high road buying bits and pieces to decorate the new shop, I literally cant wait to get up there.

I'll still be running the website while the shop's closed for a few weeks, but I really need a break from the stress and to approach it with fresh eyes. So myself and Clare are running away to Bestival for the weekend before I reopen. We need to sleep in a teepee and roll around in the mud away from London for a while.

And as for Clare, she's going to dedicate herself to her first love, Dr.Sketchy ! She's been running it for a while now and in that time she's made it into a massive big deal on the cabaret scene, Im so proud. It's now running in 3 regular venues across London, she did a special at Hampton Court Palace and she's even taking it to Bestival next month. Of course, she'll still be running small intimate Dr.Sketchy sessions in the boutique on a regular basis so keep an eye out for those, and we'll keep the bond between Sugarlesque and Dr.Sketchy going !!!

A little while ago i got a message from an old old friend Afryea (4 years old at infants school, that's how old!) asking if she could send a stylist to the boutique to lend some pieces for a singer she was managing.

That singer was the gorgeous gorgeous Cherri V, and I of course said yes !

Sugarlesque Craft Tutorial : fabric hair flowers

I've become obsessed by the Instagram app on my iphone recently, and one of the first things I used it for was doing a mini craft tutorial on one of the simplest things I know how to make - fabric hair flowers !

So, for those of you not on instagram, I thought I'd share ...

Step 1 : Cut your fabric into strips and fold over in half.

Step 2 : use a long straight stitch around 3 of the edges (not the folded edge)

Step 3 : pull the needle and thread through the fabric edges until the fabric starts to gather and pleat.

Step 4 : Roll the fabric around itself until it starts to resemble a flower. Secure the shape by sewing through the base... ta daaaaaaaaaa !!!

So without going into too much personal detail, I was really shocked and sad to hear the other day that Clare Eluka (who founded cosmetics company Raw Skin Food which we previously stocked in the boutique) is being forced to shut down her business! She has worked ridiculously hard to make into a success, and has basically been defrauded by someone very close to her who has forcibly hijacked the business she created and is attempting to run it separately from her.

But, it's also inspiring that she hasn't let this betrayal of trust defeat her. She'll be relaunching with a completely new and fresh brand later this year, and so in the meanwhile, she's having a clear out of all her remaining stock, and slashing the prices too !

So, the other day we filled the boutique with women - women women everywhere !

We held a "bad bitches photoshoot" where we invited all our female friends, four female photographers and unleashed the booze, basically. We were trying to get some images of regular women in our underwear, having fun, trying on different outfits and we're hoping to produce prints from the results, maybe even a calendar, who knows ?! Anyway, the pictures are coming to us slowly as there were a lot of pictures, a LOT, but we've been sent the first batch of pics from one of the photographers Lynda Whyte, and here they are ...

We've been planning a big photoshoot in our lovely shop with all our freinds for ages and ages, because we'd much rather see our underwear on regular girls with regular bodies and it just so happens that we think all our friends are fucking hotties !!!

Obviously we're still filming everything for our online "fly on the wall" show on our youtube channel, so we made a little behind the scenes video of the photoshoot which was last sunday...

WOOP WOOP ! We had our first bit of press for the boutique this week, in the shape of a Grazia loan out. You can spot us on page 118 this week featuring one of our favourite pieces, a wooden swallow necklace made by Lost At Sea (£52.00) - and apparently it's one of Grazia's favourites aswell !

We're looking for an intern ! If you think you, or someone you know, is up for the challenge then get in touch - deadline for applications friday 20th may.

Sugarlesque is a lingerie boutique situated in Kingly court, just off the world famous Carnaby street in central London. As well as selling lingerie, accessories and art, we also run weekly events including Dr.Sketchys burlesque life drawing class and craft workshops. We also design and make lingerie and accessories instore.

We are looking for an intern with an interest in lingerie, fashion and events management to join our exciting work environment. This is a temporary unpaid position, and applicants must be available to work flexible hours. This position would suit someone looking to enhance their c.v. as there is a lot to learn and lots of different roles to get involved in.

Your duties will include sewing, events management, serving customers, occasionally working off site at Dr.Sketchy events, PR and marketing.

Candidates must :

· Be over 18
Be based in London
Have sewing skills, experience in lingerie and sleepwear/swimwear is a bonus.
Be available to work 2-3 days a week between May and July
Have an interest in fashion and entertainment

I was so so happy when my favourite fetish pin-up model, the divine Mam'Zelle Maz, asked me to make her some custom union jack pasties in time for the royal wedding ... I tucked myself up by my desk in the boutique and set straight to work !

She wore them to an "anarchist tea party" hosted by Carrie Reichardt and she looked absolutely dazzling in her Sugarlesque nipple pasties and Lady Lucie latex. Here's a pic of her on the day - see what I mean ?! Only Maz could pull off this look, and that's why we love love love her to bits !

We're worn out ! Myself and Clare are usually full-time party girls, but even we're tired after our private shop launch, followed shortly by our official shop launch on saturday 12th march.

Really and truly, opening this shop has been a madness, no joke.

Thank god we've got so many good friends who didnt hesitate to give up their free time to help us (no mention of the ones who couldn't be bothered to show up, ahem ...)

I am STILL sewing because i just literally haven't had the time, but it'll all be fine in the end - if it's not fine, its not the end.

So we got the keys to the shop on tuesday and honestly had a bit of an anti-climactic day. I think we'd hyped ourselves up so much that when we actually showed up to the shop with no furniture, stock or paint we felt a bit sad in our big empty shop.

But by tuesday night it was all go go go ! DJ Brassfoot from Tokyo Grindhouse (who has the patience of a saint, by the way) picked me and Big Ben up from my house in a big white van and we started the mission to end all missions - picking up all our shop furniture which was scattered around London in our various homes ...

As soon as we got all the furniture in we were SO happy !!!

We stayed til about 4am then all headed back to mine, then today we made an actual start on the decoration. I did what I do best (paint stuff pink), while Clare did what she does best (paint stuff black).

Apparently I'm quite handy with a roller and a pot of pink paint, my dad would be so proud, I hardly even spilt any on the floor :)

So at the moment the shop looks like a big chaotic mess, but atleast it's getting there.

Now im going to try and sleep cos im worried Ive forgotten how to.
Tomorrow we paint some more OH JOYYY !

Ok, so apparently opening a shop is hard work. I now know this to be officially true. We took the decision to push back the shop opening by a week soooooooo, we're now opening on Tuesday 8th March !

On Wednesday night i put on my new shoes and jumped in the car with Violetta, Brown Bear and Micky and headed down to Movida for the Sharlotte Ritchie (who is adorable, by the way) calendar launch. It was being sponsored by Amber from If You Please lingerie who was putting on a fashion show, and asked me along to provide some Sugarlesque pieces aswell !

So glad i brought along Violetta, who is a BADMAN stylist, as she draped all the girls in pearls and jewellery for the runway and made them look amazing. It helped so much that the United HQ girls weren't just any models, they worked the runway like fucking rockstars, i love them !!!

Hope you all had a nice christmas, whatever you did. I had a lovely small family christmas, although my aunt and uncle thought it would be funny to give me this christmas card ...

Looks lovely doesn't it ? What's this ?! £100 inside it you say, WOW !!!

No, not quite. They printed £100 in fake money onto paper and put it inside a christmas card to trick me. Yes really. This is my family's idea of a christmas prank :(

Once I recovered from the inital shock and despair of thinking I'd been given £100 and then realising my family actually just have a fucked-up sense of humour, they gave me my actual present of a bottle of rum and a leopard print coat :)

They know me so well xxx

I'm delighted and honoured to announce a brand new wholesale stockist, just in time for christmas ... If You Please Lingerie !

Run by Amber Thomson, it's a lovely company (with a very pretty website) and she's not afraid to take a chance with small, independent British designers like me, which I absolutely love. Amber started If You Please in february 2010, and as her website says "If You Please doesn't really do boring lingerie".

Most exciting of all is that my lingerie is currently being wholesaled exclusively to If You Please - yes, exclusively :)

I'm super sad that I missed the launch party last week at Movida which a few of the WKD girls managed to attend and had a great time. From the look of the pictures it was packed full to the brim with glamour and glitz ! Instead of attending I was standing in the freezing cold of finsbury park shooting a music video - not glamorous at all :( But never mind, Amber told me today that they're already planning another glam lingerie party in february 2011, so i'll make sure to keep you posted.

Ruka + Violetta x Termanology interview for Flip Life TV

Okaaay, quick late night post about the interview that I did with my sister from another mister Violetta at the end of September for Flip Life TV.

We interviewed US rappers AZ and Termanology who were over here doing a mini tour of europe and it was really really fun. Although, and the only reason you probably can't tell is because of Novar's amazing editing, we were SOOper DOOper nervous and uncomfortable on camera ! And unprepared. And distracted. But to be honest, as the interview went on it got more and more fun and we started to enjoy it ...

Anyway, watch it and let us know what you think. It was our first ever time interviewing and so we've been on a rollercoaster of emotions with this thing, trying to decide if we ever want to do it again ... at first we loved it, then we hated it, then I loved it, then Violetta loved it, then I hated my squeaky voice, then I learnt to accept my squeaky voice, and now we've seen it online we kind of love it again. Also, I think we look very pretty, so I'm happy.

Sugarlesque x Grind Queens test shoot

We did a test shoot last sunday for the new Grind Queens feature which is part of the Tokyo Grindhouse website relaunch. This is going to be a regular feature from now on, but since it's the first time we're all working with eachother on this project, we thought it wise to so a test shoot day, which actually went amazingly well !

We started shooting in The Silver Bullet in Finsbury Park, which is a pop-up music venue that we looove. It's the same place Ragz had his album launch, and Big Ben is having his EP launch in november, and they were kind enough to open early for us to shoot there.

We shot with Bomb Voyage first and I tried my hand at styling (which I've never really done before) and also did the hair and make-up, which is something I haven't done in a while so wasn't sure how it would go ... but it all went according to plan !

We also got some great shots of her outside the bar - she's a braver woman than I, although luckily the sun came out in full force so we had great weather for outdoor shots.

Anyway, from there we drove up to Violetta Buretta's beautiful new flat and did some shots of her there ...

At this point I could breathe a sigh of relief cos Violetta's an amazing stylist and she took over at this point. The shots look soooo beautiful and we got enough footage for a good few weeks or so, so happy ! Also, it's great for me to get my underwear shot in a wide range of environments and scenes, and also to mix my underwear with clothing pieces and different brands, etc

Brassfoot also shot some behind the scenes video of the day (I hate being asked to talk on camera without warning, so although I hate this video, I have to support the cause and share it with the world). And also,everyone likes watching behind the scenes,no ?

Big thanks to Brassfoot, Mickey, Bomb Voyage, Violetta Buretta and everyone who helped in anyway ! Look out for the new Tokyo Grindhouse website launch next week - still trying to pressure Brassfoot into having a launch party, cos I love a paaartyyyyyyyyy !!!

grind queen inspiration ...

I'm really really flipping excited to be working on the Grind Queens feature relaunch with DJ Brassfoot from Tokyo Grindhouse, so we got together last week to do some brainstorming and location scouting on the streets of London ! The themed shoots are going to feature my underwear and there's a whole bunch of super talented people collaborating - so I can't wait to get started basically.

I've been collecting images both online and offline to use as inspiration for the shoots - here's just a very small selection of what I've got so far ...

Big Ben x The Leftovers

So i did a post last week about the cover i designed for Ragz Sweet Jones' new album and what a struggle it had been. What i didn't mention was the reason it had been such a struggle was because I was trying to design 2 music covers at the same time ! One for Ragz and the other one for Big Ben, whose cover I designed for his first mixtape "Good Food Rap".

He's just released "Good Food Rap ... The Leftovers" today, which is like a collection of all the extra songs that didn't make it onto the final cut of his first mixtape. So for the cover, I played around with the original design of the first mixtape but added some chicken wing leftovers ... YUMMM

Anyway, I'm really really happy with the cover and I love the mixtape - infact I've just been on the phone to him frantically getting him to send me a copy by email since my computers too old to download it :(

Oh my boys have done me so proud recently ! But especially Big Ben cos he's my absolute favourite of them all ♥

It's available for free download, yes completely free ! And really you need it in your life - if you don't know about Big Ben - you're late, I really think he's the most talented rapper in this country right now so don't miss out.

Ragz Sweet Jones x Music 4 Miss Peaches

For the record I'm not a graphic designer or anything and I'm not actually very good at it. But I have got a creative eye, and over the years I've done bits and pieces here and there on photoshop for my own business and I really enjoy it - every now and again. So when 1 of my favourite boys in the whole wide world asked me to design the artwork for his upcoming music release, how could I refuse ?!

Although designing the cover for "Music 4 Miss Peaches" was a frustrating process, Ragz is like my brother, so it was worth the struggle ! He came with a full concept and a beautiful drawing of an ocelot he did himself - so it was an interesting design brief. Anyway, this is his first album release produced by Supar Novar - and it's free to download :
